“We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” Romans 8:22 (NIV)
My husband and I recently visited a local aquarium. I always love admiring the beauty, wonder, and variety of the creatures God created. This aquarium had a special exhibit: a whole room full of glass columns of jellyfish. We could walk around and study them from each angle.
They were exquisite. They moved like small ballerinas, with undulating waves, creating mesmerizing shapes. In spite of their beauty, I knew if I met them in the open ocean, I would be terrified—and rightly so. Jellyfish stings can range from painful to fatal.
Watching them, I wondered if I was catching a glimpse of what God created them to be before the fall into sin, before all of nature changed. It’s fun to imagine creation before sin and violence entered the picture. A jellyfish’s poison, a shark’s brutal bite, a wound from a sea-urchin needle, all remind us of the consequences of rebelling against God’s plan.
But the beauty of creation also reminds us that just as He restored our relationship with Him through Jesus, He will also restore creation to the beautiful way it was intended.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for showing Your love and vibrant creativity in the beauties of our world. Open our eyes to see Your nature. Help us rejoice in the restoration ahead.
