“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13 (NIV)
Man was born with a willful mind, with freedom to choose whatever way he wished. This freedom was given to make us strong; that we might struggle against sin and choose life. God gave us the right to choose between good and evil because the option to choose wrongly makes the choice of the right option so much more powerful.
While some look at this verse and only think of it in the context of slavery versus freedom, we can look at it in a much broader sense. Whether slaves or free, we are called to the freedom of everlasting life. This calling is so much more than an earthly calling. Daily, we can throw off the chains of sin, guilt, anxiety, all the thoughts that bind us to this world and choose life in Him.
Because of this, we should not waste our lives on earthly indulgences, rather we are called to love one another and spread the Gospel.
Prayer: Lord, help me to continue to choose you. Keep me on the path towards righteousness and help me find ways throughout my day to serve the people you place in my life. Amen.
