“Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb. I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made!” Psalm 139: 13-14
Let’s think about the brain for just a few minutes. It contains 100 billion nerve cells and another 100 trillion connections, and 100 billion glia cells, all floating around in this jellied mass of gray matter. These cells are constantly sifting and sorting through information, storing memories, and sending out orders. Doctors recognize that the human brain remains one of the greatest mysteries in science and one of the greatest challenges in medicine.
The brain is being studied now more than any other time in human history, and then there’s the whole area of artificial intelligence. You could be reading this on your phone right now and could stop and ask SIRI how much a brain weighs, and in a matter of a few seconds, you know your brain weighs approximately three pounds. We marvel at SIRI as an intelligent assistant and navigator. But remember SIRI didn’t invent herself. It was the human brain who created SIRI.
The brain is where we get our motivation to purity and love or to evil and anger. Some scientists attempt to explain notions like romantic love or goodness in terms of chemical balances in the brain. Some even suggest that the notion of God is merely a series of electrical impulses in my brain. Dr. Paul Brand, doctor, scientist and Christian, responded to that thought with a question. “How do I know that these electrical impulses are not God’s chosen device for communicating to me a spiritual reality that couldn’t otherwise be known?” Ponder that thought for a while.
Now your brain may look just like mine, but the mind? Your mind is different, making you uniquely you. Your mind involves your will, the way you think, believe, and choose to live.
Perhaps it saves a bit of time to ask SIRI for the factual answers to questions and to use her as our guidance system for spatial directions. But when you want real guidance and the answers to living a purposeful life with eternal perspective, seek the One who made the brain who made SIRI. Allow His Spirit to fill your mind and your heart.
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2: 5
Prayer: Father, help me to realize what a marvelous Creator you are, and help me to surrender my will to you. Help me to think and behave like you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
