“The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:17-18 (NIV)
We are all broken and wounded some way or another. Our physical bodies fail us. The people we love and trust fail us. Our own spirits fail us. But the beautiful promise of this verse is that God never fails us.
When we are deep in the trenches of despair, when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we are never truly alone. The world may cast us aside, but God never does. He walks each step of the way with his children. These verses promise that when we cry to the Lord, when we come to him pleading with him to hear us, to help us, to save us, that he is faithful, and he will deliver us.
Even when our spirits are crushed, God is able to take the broken pieces of our lives, of our very souls, and put them back together. We may not be able to see how God could ever do this, but even in our hardest times, in our places of deepest difficulties, he is always at work behind the scenes, with us, working something beautiful in our lives. Out of the ashes he will bring beauty and joy again. All that is left for us to do is to come before him and lay our sorrows, our griefs, and our pains at his feet and to allow him to heal and restore us. And he who promised is faithful to deliver.
