“Then Jesus declared,’“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.'” John 6:35 (NIV)
Jesus is the bread of life. He is the Word of God, revealed to man. Just like those who eat of bread and feel sustained, those who believe in Jesus will be lifted up in life. Salvation is available to anyone who seeks it, but constant exercise of faith is important to the spiritual life of a Christian. When Christians do not actively live a life of faith, their spiritual lives starve.
Because bread is only nourishing when it is consumed; water is only quenching of our thirst when it is drank. God wishes us to be sustained, supported, and strengthened by His Word but it is in our hands whether we hunger and thirst for Him. Take time to think about whether you are nourishing your spiritual life. Are you feeding it with God’s Word, time in prayer, ministry to others? Jesus is the bread of life, which has been made to be food for our souls.
Prayer: Dear Lord, give me today the hunger and thirst for your Word and your ways. Help me to consume it daily and stay sustained in your will. Amen.
