“But Jesus told him, ‘Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.'” Matthew 8:22 (NIV)
This passage of Matthew depicts Jesus calling forth followers to His cause. This particular verse stand out because it can seem rather callous and cold. But what Jesus was doing was testing the mettle of those around Him. It’s one thing to follow when it is easy, another thing entirely to follow when it is hard. Those lacking in zeal for the Gospel delayed with excuses, and you must be willing to deny yourself to fully serve the Lord.
Jesus was asking of this follower an important sacrifice, to prove the test of his devotion. There comes times when we must choose between the things of this Earth and heavenly things, whether we will side with our friends or side with God, whether we will deny what we believe or stand for the unpopular choice.
When you meet with these choices, remember what is eternal and what is temporary. Put aside your cares and earthly fears and follow your Savior. Pray this bold prayer with me today.
Prayer: Dear Lord, show me where I need to sacrifice my needs in exchange for Kingdom work. Give me your zeal, your peace, your calling today. Help me live without fear and never bend from doing right. Amen.
