“He mocks proud mockers but shows favor to the humble and oppressed. The wise inherit honor, but fools get only shame.” Proverbs 3:34-35 (NIV)
God has a sense of humor. You might have a different opinion about that, but I’m pretty sure it’s true. After all, we are made in His image. Something that is funny flips things on their heads; when you’re expecting one thing, the funny part is when it’s something completely different. Many things in the Bible could be thought of as funny because God’s wisdom has a way of turning things around completely.
This verse in Proverbs says God will mock proud mockers. This isn’t just saying that God will punish mockers, but that he will show them the hurt that they did to others. There is such a beauty in this balanced justice, that it can be thought of as funny. Just as Jesus literally turned tables of sinners in the Temple, so the new way to salvation through Him turned the tables of all eternity.
Whether you’ve been a mocker or a fool, we can all embrace the salvation offered to us through Christ. Take some time to think about the wrongs made right through Christ. Give God thanks today for your salvation through the death and resurrection through Christ, which defies logic.
Prayer: Lord, please give me a heart to see Your will. Give me wisdom that I may know your ways and humility to know where I would be without You. Amen.
